Explore your body
Most of us have known times when we felt totally at home in our bodies - vibrant, alive, assured, in touch with ourselves and aware of our sensual contact with the world around us. Yet most of those times have been all too brief: enoyed while on holiday, perhaps, only to fade afterwards.
Being aware of your body means having your attention fully in your body, living through your body, so that mind and body are united. As adults, much of our time and energy is spent in our heads and we exist out of contact with parts of our bodies.
When you are fully aware of your body, your movements are spontaneous, free and co-ordinated, your perception is keen, your body is charged with feeling. You possess an inner confidence, a sense of vitality, and a responsiveness to the world around you that are the essence of true sensuality.
Most of the time, we have an incomplete sense of our bodies - we may be strongly aware of our upper bodies but lack feeling in our legs and feet, or we may sense the right side of the body more fully than the left. We become used to the stiffness and tension we carry around and to relating to ourselves from the point of view of how we look rather than how we feel.
Becoming more aware of your body quietens your mind and re-awakens your senses. As you learn to stand or move with a strong sense of centre, your self-assurance grows: you cannot easily be thrown off-balance. You experience a sense of wholeness. The more you are in touch with your body, the more you know who you are and what you feel; after all, your body is part of your self.
