Sit comfortably near an open window. Close your eyes and remain very still and quiet. Focus your hearing on sounds immediately around you.
Try to separate sounds without trying to identify them. Then allow your hearing to extend to just beyond the window, then further away. When you're ready, switch between distant and immediate sounds.
