Italic

italic

A type style that is designed to reflect some of the elements of handwritten script. Italic typefaces slope toward the right and have rounded lines (but not all oblique typefaces are italic). Most typesetting systems have individually-designed italic faces to match their roman (normal upright style) faces, but some systems create italics by applying a transformation to their standard fonts. Some dot matrix printers can print italics on command, but normally material that would be set in italic in printed material is underlined in typewritten material (and similarly, the proofreader's marking to indicate italicized text is a single line beneath the text).
